Welcome

Good morning! I want to wish you a warm welcome today, and especially
welcome you if you are worshipping with us for the first time. If you're
new to us, please sign in on the top of the pink friendship sheets that are
circulating around. Jon is holding one up right now so you can see what
they look like. If you fill in the top with some information about
yourself, we won't phone you or come to your house - we'll only send you a
nice letter, unless you indicate that there is some other way you'd like
help in meeting your spiritual needs. Please join us for coffee/cookies following
the service right here. And now let us take a moment to prepare ourselves
for worship...please pray with me....

Mathew 2:1-11

Bradley
-
1After
Jesus was born in
Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east
came to
Jerusalem

MAGI-(John) "Where is the
one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have
come to worship him."

Bradley
-
3When King
Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all
Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people's chief
priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born

MAGI-(John) "In Bethlehem in
Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:

6" 'But
you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

      are by no means least among the rulers of
Judah;

   for out of you will come a ruler

      who will be the shepherd of my people
Israel."

Bradley - 7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from
them the exact time the star had appeared.
8He sent them to Bethlehem and said…

HEROD (Jim)- "Go
and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me,
so that I too may go and worship him."

Bradley - 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way,
and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over
the place where the child was.
10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they
saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then
they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense
and of myrrh.
12And having been warned in a dream
not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Great is Thy Faithfullness

Eb/G

Benediction:

258 Sovereignty

LORD my weak thought in vain would climb

To search the starry vault profound

In vain would wing her flight sublime

To find creation's outmost bound

But weaker yet that thought must prove

To search thy great eternal plan

Thy sovereign counsels born of love

Long ages ere the world began

When my dim reason would demand

Why that or this thou dost ordain

By some vast deep I seem to stand

Whose secrets I must ask in vain

When doubts disturb my troubled breast

And all is dark as night to me

Here as on solid rock I rest

That so it seemeth good to thee

Be this my joy that evermore

Thou rulest all things at thy will

Thy sovereign wisdom I adore

And calmly sweetly trust thee still

This hymn of Dr Ray Palmer is based upon Romans 1 1 33 Oh the depth of the
riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God how unsearchable are his
judgments and his ways past finding out It was composed in 1850 when he was
in the midst of an experience of great personal suffering from ill health
which rendered him a helpless invalid for a season It appeared first in the
Sabbath Hymn and Tune Book 1858 In
it the writer's trust in God's sovereignty is beautifully expressed but he
admits that in some phases of its manifestation he finds inscrutable
mysteries One becomes wearied with the exercise of his reason and settles
down only upon an unswerving faith Here as on solid rock he rests Such a
hymn is worthy of the author of My faith look's up to thee.

Gen 1:1 - Isa 41:4

"Be silent before me, you islands!

Let the nations renew their strength!

Let them come forward and speak;

let us meet together at the place of judgment.

2 "Who has stirred up one from the east,

calling him in righteousness to his service?

He hands nations over to him

and subdues kings before him.

He turns them to dust with his sword,

to windblown chaff with his bow.

3 He pursues them and moves on unscathed,

by a path his feet have not traveled before.

4 Who has done this and carried it through,

calling forth the generations from the beginning?

I, the LORD--with the first of them

and with the last--I am he."

(from New International Version)

Job 12:13-25

13 "To God belong wisdom and power;

counsel and understanding are his.

14 What he tears down cannot be rebuilt;

the man he imprisons cannot be released.

15 If he holds back the waters, there is drought;

if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.

16 To him belong strength and victory;

both deceived and deceiver are his.

17 He leads counselors away stripped

and makes fools of judges.

18 He takes off the shackles put on by kings

and ties a loincloth around their waist.

19 He leads priests away stripped

and overthrows men long established.

20 He silences the lips of trusted advisers

and takes away the discernment of elders.

21 He pours contempt on nobles

and disarms the mighty.

22 He reveals the deep things of darkness

and brings deep shadows into the light.

23 He makes nations great, and destroys them;

he enlarges nations, and disperses them.

24 He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason;

he sends them wandering through a trackless waste.

25 They grope in darkness with no light;

he makes them stagger like drunkards.

(from New International Version)
