Hello All
Day 1.
We've made it to Puerta Cabeza. What a trip. We flew out of SFo at 12:30am on Friday night( Saturday Morning) and landed in Managua on the west coast of Nicaragua around 9am. Didn't get much sleep on the plane. Customs almost didn't let us take 22 f our boxes that were filled with medical supplies and Medicine. After Earl (Preacher at Verbo Church here in Nica) called the minister of Health for Nicaragua we got the strings pulled for us to get our stuff.
Things really got interesting when we took a bus trip accross Nica from Managua to Puerta About 600 Miles. The begining of the bus trip wasn't all that bad. Earl let all of us that came down have our own seet. There were about 7 people Earl brougt over from Puerta to help. On the drive we saw lots of things. Trash everywhere lots and lots of it. Little shacks where people are selling goods, many of them the front room of the house they live in. And then on the same block a huge compound with a nice house, yard, and cars. There were also so many people walking. I was struck by the diversity... There were brand new trucks and cars, cars that you were uncertain to how they are still running, people on bikes, people on Horses, Horse drawn buggies and bunches of people walking.
We were able to see a lot of the country side. The roads were so so so bumpy with huge pot holes and places where streams had run down the middle of the road. This made it so uncomfortable and pretty impossible to get sleep. It was truly beautiful, many many creeks and a couple large rivers. Some of the trees were huge and mast of them had plants growing on their branches. There were many towns on the road and some of them were just a colection of shacks. Many of the bridges were made of railroad ties like this -II-II- The bottom section went across while the top section went down.
We went across the last river before Puerta Cabesa on a Barge. That was also really cool. So we ended up having an 18 hour trip through Nica.
Day 2.
We went to the hospital today. I had seen the pictures from last year but was suprised at its condition. It seems like many of the rooms would be in a condemned building. Not that they aren't kept clean but the walls are cracked and it just seems...old. The hospital is right in town surounded by the shacks and small houseFront businesses.
We were all prepared to just do surgeries and Jane was going to be doing her Derm clinic. It turned out that one of the ladies down here had been handing out appointments for people. So when we got to the hospital this morning we were mobbed with people wanting to be checked out by the doctors. So Susan Andrew and myself processed people by checking the slip of paper they had recieved and making a list. Rich and Mark Nicoles will be cheking these people in between their surgeries. This was a very hard thing to do because there were so many people so many that were obviously in pain and in need of care but we were not set up as a clinic but to do surgeries. I had to say no to one man who wanted his mother to get some care. She was in a lot of pain and he was very nice. We will be taking care of him because he has a lump in his chest.
Anyway I will update soon.
